Description

Highway Book Shop, Cobalt, ON, 1976.  ISBN 0-88954-094-2.  Stapled card covers, 58 pages including Bibliography.  Very good minus; wraps show some spine end wear, a few age spots and light soil on covers.  Interior clean and unmarked; black & white illustrations and maps by Cecil Dunn.  ‘John Horden, first Bishop of Moosonee, was buried at Moose Factory in 1893 with his mocassins on.  He had worked there as priest and bishop for more than forty years.  These letters, written between 1883 and 1885, are a cross-section of his long life of service in the north.  Illuminated by James Scanlon’s commentary and the illustrations of Cecil Dunn, the letters stand like church windows looking out on the northland that the Bishop knew.  Through these windows we see Indians and whites, Eskimo, clergy, Hudson Bay Company staff, many others.  We see them working suffering, celebrating, in a portrait of a way of life that is now history.’ (from rear wrap)
