An early 20th century novel by Canadian author Marian Keith (Mary Esther MacGregor) revolving around the William Gordon family in the Simcoe area of Ontario. William’s genteel maiden sister Margaret from Scotland arrives for a short visit but finds her brother very recently widowed with eight young children. She plans to stay until the elder children and her brother are able to take care of the younger ones, but time goes on and Margaret pushes her plan to return home ever forward. She is particularly concerned about one of the children, Elizabeth, and how she will make her way in the world.
