Description

McGraw-Hill, New York, 1969, 1st English translation edition.  Hard cover, 474 pages.  Very good for age; light corner and spine end wear, slight lean, binding sound; orange top-stain.  Dust jacket has some edge, corner and cover wear, short edge tears with some repaired on verso, creases on rear flap.  Interior clean and unmarked.  Translated from the German by Rosemarie Mays.  An editor reads a manuscript and ‘becomes increasingly uneasy for the safety of the young author (he is twenty-one); and by the time the Paris Express has reached its destination the editor is filled with dread.  Could Oliver Manfeld’s story really be true?  As the editor steps off the train, newspaper headlines declare:  OLIVER MANSFELD FOUND HANGED TO DEATH.  There is nothing to do but surrender the manuscript to the police and what the police read is what we read.  Is it a true story or is it pure fiction that Oliver Mansfeld has put down?’ (from front flap)
