Description

Cassell, Petter & Galpin, London Paris & New York, no date.  Translated into English Verse by Walter Thornbury and illustrations by Gustave Dore.  Very large heavy hard cover, 839 pages follow by 4 pages of ads.  Blue cloth over boards with gilt lettering and illustrations on front and spine.  Front board detached with sections of cloth missing, corners worn to boards; spine worn and darkened with several repairs and some pieces of cloth missing.  Rear board has been taped in and still holding but is weak.  Dark blue end-papers and paste-downs; frontis of La Fontaine with tissue guard laid in; all edges gilt.  Pages and illustrations are all present.  Small drop in margins of pp. 335 and 381; occasional age spot; pages lightly tanned.  Includes An Essay on the Life and Works of Jean de La Fontaine; The Life of Aesop, The Phrygian; Dedication to Monseigneur the Dauphin;  Preface; To Monseigneur the Dauphin; 241 fables, and 86 full page illustrations by Dore.  John George Hodgins (1821-1912) was a Canadian author and Deputy Minister of Education for Ontario.  Aside from various honours and awards received, he was considered instrumental in perfecting the Ontario school system at that time.
