Description

Ward, Lock & Co., London, 1943, 2nd pr.  Hard cover, 224 pages.  Very good; brown cloth with black lettering on spine; bit of edge, corner and spine end wear, small dent to bottom edge and rear fore-edge; binding sound.  No jacket.  Gift inscription on FEP; remainder of interior clean and unmarked with lightly tanned pages.  Fearing a Napoleonic invasion and with soaring prices for meat and wool, the highlands were being ‘cleared’ to make room for sheep.  This is a story about the Clearance of the Clann Varish in 1809 from the Wester Ross lands of the Earl of Alcaster.  The Earl appoints Adam Metcalfe to assist his Factor in the removal of the people, however, Metcalfe does not approve of what is happening and works to help the people.
