Graham.  Hard cover, 330 pages including Index.  Red boards with gold rules and decorations on front board along with gold and black medallion; spine darkened with faded gold lettering and decorations.  Some tears and small losses at spine head, and a bit of wear at spine bottom.  Binding sound with head and tail bands.  Interior clean and unmarked with occasional age spot; some pages not opened; colour and black & white plates.  ‘In preparing these volumes for popular sale, the Smithsonian Institution has been actuated by two motives:  first, the desire to diffuse knowledge more widely; and second, the desire to supplement its own inadequate resources for the increase of knowledge.’ (from Foreword)
