Description

 

T. Nelson and Sons, Paternoster Row, London, 1868.  Hard cover, 470 pages including Index.  Withdrawn from Queen's University Library, Kingston, Ontario.  Orange cloth, beveled edges front and rear; gilt rules and decoration on front board with gilt lettering, blind stamping; gilt lettering and decorations plus blind stamping on worn and faded spine; blind stamp on rear board.  All edges gilt.  Shelf and edge wear, corners bumped and worn to boards with some fraying, cloth worn and torn with some losses at spine ends with some fraying.  Boards show some soil/stains and rubs.  No jacket.  Usual library markings and attachments on spine and to interior.  Donation plate from Estate of Dr. Snodgrass affixed to front paste-down; decorative Latin presentation book plate dated 1870 affixed to front end paper.  Library tape at front and rear hinges beginning to let go; rear hinge cracked at page 470 and appears to have been repaired.  All pages secure.  Profusely illustrated with black & white plates, diagrams and illustrations on text pages.  Pages clean and unmarked, lightly tanned with occasional age spot.  Contents include:  Book I.-History of the Ocean; Book II.-The Phenomena of Ocean; Book III.-The Marine World; and Book IV.-Man and the Ocean.  Very heavy book.  Translated, Edited, and Enlarged from the French of Arthur Mangin, by The Translator of "The Bird."  With 130 illustrations by W. Freeman and J. Noel.
