Hard cover, with Our Mutual Friend being chapters 2 to 16 followed by Chapter The Last and Postscript containing pages 667 to 857; Hard Times – Book The First-Sowing being chapters 1 to 16, Book The Second-Reaping being chapters 1 to 12 and Book The Third-Garnering being chapters 1 to 9 containing pages 1 to 269; and Pictures From Italy containing pages 1 to 176. Purple cloth over boards with chipped paper label on spine; edge, cover, corner and spine end wear, board exposed at lower front and upper rear corner, small tears to cloth at spine ends; some spots, fading and mottling to cloth; rear board bowed due to water damage. Binding with headbands cracked at front and rear endpapers, all pages secure; top edge gilt with a white mark, fore and bottom edges untrimmed (some pages have not been opened). Old water mark at upper margins and fore-edges, not affecting readability; occasional age spot. Illustrations by E. G. Dalziel, H. French, F. Walker and Marcus Stone; all illustrations present with printed tissue guards intact. One of the first thousand impressions from a new set of plates, with publisher’s facsimile signature.
