Description

H. M. Caldwell, New York, 1889 copyright by Estes and Lauriat.  Hard cover, 256 pages.  Illustrated front board and spine; front has framed and stamped silver lettering and design; green lettering and design on spine.  Boards show wear, some soil/age spots; evidence of damp staining along bottom edges; scrape on rear board; corner and spine end wear with a bit of fraying.  No jacket.  Binding cracked at various spots throughout; binding a bit loose but all pages present and secure.  A few pages have small losses along edges; occasional stray mark.  Old damp stain visible in top margin of some pages towards rear; interior clean with occasional age spot.  Small store label affixed to rear paste-down.  Profusely illustrated with black & white drawings and full-page plates, including frontispiece.  ‘We had resolved, then, to go to Spain to study the history of America; that is, to hunt out the homes of the early conquistadores (or conquerors), to examine the types of architecture we had seen reproduced in the West Indies, to visit Palos, whence Columbus sailed for America, Cadiz and Seville, the flourishing cities of that age, and the Alhambra, where the last of the Moors reared that palace so famous throughout the world.  Other objects we had also; but the central idea was history and about this you will find grouped adventure and the incidents of travel.’ (from p. 13)
