However, movie buffs will note that it was Hawks, not Hughes, that directed most of the film. Proclaimed a “sex-western” by certain critics, and considered an “outlaw” movie in more ways than one by the censors of the day, the film was held out of theaters for approximately two years before Russell showed the public what Hughes had carefully managed in private. “The Outlaw” became an instant hit, and Russell became the new femme fatale of Hollywood with producers standing in lines as long as audiences outside the movie houses.
